Human Rights Group, CHSR Condemns Appointment Of Moshood Jimoh As Head Of Zone 2 Command ...Commends Appointment Of CP Fatai Tijani As Lagos State Police Commissioner




A human rights group, Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights (CHSR), has strongly condemned and opposed the appointment of AIG Moshood Jimoh as the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Police Command.

The group said in a statement signed by its President, Comrade Alex Omotehinse, that its position was informed by AIG Jimoh's antecedents while serving as Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, which, they said fell short of acceptable standards of professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights.

"During his tenure, there were persistent reports of restricted access to justice, including the refusal to entertain or allow follow-up on petitions and complaints—leaving many victims without recourse.

"Furthermore, his record reflects actions inconsistent with democratic policing. Notably, he was associated with the declaration of a citizen as wanted for participating in a protest against the demolition of the Oworonshoki community; an incident that raised serious legal and human rights concerns and attracted judicial scrutiny.

"There were also instances where his public conduct suggested alignment with state government positions, particularly on issues relating to community demolitions, thereby raising questions about the neutrality expected of his office," the group said.

CHSR added that of grave concern were events in January 2026, including the rejection of a duly submitted notification for a peaceful protest and request for police protection; the use of force, including tear gas, against peaceful protesters at the Lagos State House of Assembly.

It also mentioned allegations of misinformation regarding the conduct of protesters; reports of direct involvement in the assault of protest leaders, including Comrade Hassan Taiwo (Soweto), during lawful demonstrations.

"In light of these and other concerns, CHSR firmly maintains that AIG Moshood Jimoh is not suitably qualified, by record or disposition, to oversee Zone 2 Police Command, which supervises both Lagos and Ogun State Commands.

"His appointment risks undermining public trust and may expose the Nigeria Police Force to further allegations of abuse of office.

"Conversely, CHSR unequivocally commends the Inspector-General of Police for the appointment of CP Fatai Tijani as the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State. 

"Based on his track record; particularly his service as OC D4 at SCID Panti, Area Commander (Area C), and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) in Lagos State; his appointment reflects competence, experience, and suitability for the role. 

"We consider him a fitting choice and a positive step toward restoring public confidence in policing within the state.

"CHSR also extends its congratulations to the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, on his elevation. 

"Given his distinguished service record, including his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and Commissioner of Police, IRT, we are confident in his capacity to advance meaningful reforms within the Nigeria Police Force.

"We trust that his leadership will strengthen professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights across all commands," the statement read.
