In years past, the arrival of the rainy season sent waves of anxiety across many communities in Ondo State. From Ilaje to Idanre, residents would brace themselves for the devastating impact of floods, homes submerged, roads cut off, livelihoods ruined, and in some tragic instances, lives lost. However, this painful reality is now being rewritten, thanks to the bold and unprecedented efforts of the administration of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.
Flooding has remained one of the most pressing environmental challenges in Ondo State, especially in low-lying and riverine communities. In Akure South, parts of Odigbo, Ondo East and West, and particularly the coastal terrains of Ilaje, tales abound of how families were forced out of their homes, crops destroyed, and roads rendered impassable due to blocked canals and unchecked water channels. For years, these communities called for intervention, often receiving minimal or delayed responses.
The lack of proper drainage, unregulated urban expansion, and the silting of natural waterways compounded the problem, leaving local governments overwhelmed and residents at the mercy of nature.
Since assuming office, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has demonstrated a pragmatic commitment to environmental resilience. One of the administration’s cornerstone interventions has been a state-wide channelization and de-silting of waterways and canals, aimed at permanently addressing the flooding menace.
The projects have been spearheaded by a seasoned team of environmental experts, led by Engineer Elisha Ebijimi, whose technical expertise and hands-on approach have ensured that this ambitious project is executed with precision and speed.
So far, the channelization work has made significant inroads in Ilaje, Ese-Odo, Odigbo, Ondo West, Ondo East, Akure South, Idanre, and Ile-Oluji local government areas. These projects involve opening up clogged drainage systems, clearing canals, and re-establishing natural waterways that had long been blocked by years of neglect or indiscriminate waste disposal.
Communities that previously lived in fear with each approaching storm now express relief and renewed confidence in government. In parts of Akure South and Idanre, residents have spoken glowingly about how areas that were once flood hotspots are now able to withstand heavy rainfall without any significant incident.
In Ilaje and Odigbo, where water channels are intricately linked to both sea tides and rainfall patterns, the intervention has not only improved drainage but has also supported better sanitation and public health outcomes.
Engr. Elisha Ebijimi the Managing Director of Ola-Sheu Dynamic Service, Dredging and Construction Company and his team deserve commendation for their dedication and technical foresight. Their work has been described by observers as "tremendous," especially for communities that have suffered for years due to the seasonal flooding menace.
The Aiyedatiwa administration has so far matched words with action, allocating resources and providing political will to back these environmental projects. The decision to involve local governments in the process has also ensured that the response is rooted in community needs and that maintenance structures are put in place to avoid a relapse.
Environmental experts and civil society groups have hailed the ongoing projects as one of the most comprehensive anti-flood interventions in the history of Ondo State.
However, as the climate continues to evolve and rainfall patterns become even more unpredictable, there is a call for sustainability. This includes constant maintenance of cleared canals, expansion of the project to more vulnerable communities, and environmental education of residents to discourage practices that worsen flooding, such as dumping waste in drainage paths.
As Ondo State continues on this progressive path under Governor Aiyedatiwa, it is essential that this momentum is not lost. The success achieved so far shows that with the right leadership, collaboration, and technical capacity, environmental challenges like flooding can be overcome.
The people of Ondo State are no longer just hoping for safety during the rains, they are experiencing it. And for that, the leadership of Governor Aiyedatiwa and the technical expertise of Engr.
