Residents Raise Concern Over Failure of LASIEC To Replace Deceased Councillors In Lagos Mainland, Apapa-Iganmu, Ibeju-Lekki LGs

Residents of Ward H in Lagos Mainland Local Government Area, Ward D in Apapa-Iganmu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) and Ward C1 in Ibeju-Lekki LCDA in Lagos State have expressed concern over the inability of the Lagos State Independent National Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to conduct bye-elections into these wards in the affected local government and LCDAs after the death of the councillors representing the wards.

The late councilors were elected in 2021 and their tenures ought to end in 2025.

Names of deceased councillors were given as Mulikat  Toyin Bamgboye from Ward H in Lagos Mainland LGA, who died on January 2, 2022, Mr Disu Kamorudeen Babatunde from Ward D in Apapa Iganmu LCDA, who died on December 29, 2022, and Yinusa Sulaiman Olawale from Ward C1, Ibeju Lekki LCDA, who died on May  11, 2022.

Investigations revealed that Mrs Ayotunde Phillips-led LASIEC has been notified of the death of the deceased, but that the Commission is yet to accede to the request for their replacements.

A resident of Ward D in Apapa-Iganmu LCDA, who gave his name as Alhaji Olatunde Lawal, said that the issue is affecting their community as nobody is representing them in the council at the moment.

Lawal stated that all efforts made to ensure a replacement for the late Hon Disu Babatunde, who represented the area, proved abortive, and called on the government to rise to the occasion and conduct a bye-election to replace the deceased.

Also speaking, Mrs Deborah Owolabi from Ward H in Lagos Mainland Local Government, said that the death of the councillor that represented the area, Hon Mulikat Bamgboye, was painful, but that she ought to have been replaced after a year of her demise.

"We are left with nobody to represent us at the council since the death of Mrs Bamgboye. This is just too bad. We want a replacement and we have several people that have indicated interest in the office," she said.

In her comments, Chief Adewale Ijaola from Ward C1 in Ibeju-Lekki LCDA, called on the government to replace their councilor, Hon Yinusa Olawale, who died over a year ago.

He said; "We are calling on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the state and the Chairman of LASIEC, Justice Ayotunde Philips to listen to our demand and replace the late councilor.

"We know that they love the state, so we want them to do the needful now. The people are expecting much from them and we hope that they will listen to us and do the bye-election now."

Efforts made to get an official of LASIEC to comment on the matter as at the time we went to press proved abortive.

Court Sets Aside Arrest, Remand, Wanted Declaration Against Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi

A Magistrate Court sitting in Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos, has set aside its earlier ex-parte order authorizing the arrest, remand, and “wanted” declaration of Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi, also known as Hammed Ajiran. The development follows the earlier declaration of Akanbi as wanted for alleged multiple murder by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Olorundare Jimoh, on February 19, 2026. However, in a ruling delivered today, Magistrate L.A. Owolabi of Magistrate Court 3 nullified the ex-parte order initially granted on February 16, 2026. In his decision, Magistrate Owolabi held that the order was obtained through the concealment of material facts. The court specifically noted that the counsel who filed and argued the application, Nosa Watson Uhumwangho, was under suspension by the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee at the time and therefore lacked the right of audience before the court. The ruling sparked jubilation among members of the youth wing of the Ojomu royal family, who...
